O, Christmas Tree!

The Christmas tree is often the first Xmas decoration to get scrutinized when environmental responsibility comes into play. A fresh tree will take one of these beauties from its natural habitat. The artificial tree will add to the pollution problem because it is made from nonrenewable petroleum, and other synthetic substances. So which option can you take? The truth is that most fresh trees come from tree farms designed specifically for this purpose. And while that planted tree may only benefit our environment for 15 years or so (the time it takes for a Christmas tree to mature), chances are a new tree or two will go into the ground in its place.

On the other hand, while artificial trees may be made from products that are not recyclable, the number of years that you hang onto that artificial tree may help to offset the toll that it might take on the environment. To ensure that your Christmas tree is indeed “green,” make sure that you buy your tree from a responsible tree farm that replaces all of the trees it cuts down. Keep your artificial tree for as many years as possible, to ensure that the environment is safe from the additional waste. With proper care, some of these trees can last a decade or more. And for the really environmentally conscious, select a “living” tree as your Xmas decoration that you can decorate indoors for the holiday, and then plant in your yard when Christmas is over.

Decking the Halls

Xmas is an annual holiday whose basic purpose is to celebrate the birth of Jesus. There are many different festivities that are celebrated around this time of year, most of which combine the commemoration of Jesus’ birth with various customs, depending on the particular family, what they believe in and what customs they like to celebrate.

Xmas is typically celebrated on the 25th of December each year and in Western culture, one of the most notable parts of Xmas is the gift giving. Families and friends buy gifts for one another, keep them underneath of the Christmas tree and then hand them out on Christmas morning. There are some areas where they also have a custom of opening up a single gift each Christmas Eve, which is supposed to bring luck for the next day.

Santa Claus

Santa Claus, who is also known by other names such as Pere Noel and Father Christmas, is known worldwide as a jolly fat bearded man sporting a red suit that is trimmed with white fur. Santa is the figure that children believe comes at night on a sled led by reindeer and who drops off presents to fill their stockings.

All people celebrate Xmas differently, but from November onwards, regardless of where you are in the world it is pretty hard to ignore the fact that Christmas is right around the corner, what with the Christmas lights and colored lights that decorate the town centers and shops. Christmas cards are another major part of the holiday, and the custom of sending cards actually started in Britain in 1840 when the first Penny Post public postal deliveries began.

Traditionally Christmas cards show religious pictures including Joseph and the baby Jesus, although in today’s world there are various other options as well that you can choose from.

Newer Xmas Songs

Some of the newer Xmas songs are just as beautiful sounding as the traditional Christmas songs, but with a new twist. You might hear “Behold a Miracle” or “Christmas is Your Birthday Lord”. These newer songs are not heard as often as the more traditional Christmas songs. Many different artists record them and some are just instrumentals with no words. “Hark the Harold Angels Sing” and “It Came upon the Midnight Clear” are some of the more traditional songs you will hear at Christmas time. “O Christmas Tree” is a favor of everyone’s. Many recording artists have taken some of the songs of Christmas and turned them into funny and humorous songs. Some of the Xmas songs are not meant for kids to listen to and some are done by characters such as the Chipmunks. When it comes to Xmas songs, everyone gets in on the band wagon. There are more varieties of one Christmas song than any other songs every recorded.

Berlin had been commissioned to write a song about every holiday of the year for the upcoming film, “Holiday Inn.” However, his Jewish roots left him sorely lacking when it came to creating a piece for the Christmas holiday. It was his observations of the festivities of the season when he was a boy growing up in New York, coupled with the time that he spent in Los Angeles, that inspired the song “White Christmas.” When crooner Bing Crosby heard Berlin audition his song in 1941, he knew that the tune would be a hit.

“White Christmas” goes to the Public

Bing Crosby first sang “White Christmas” on his radio show, The Kraft Music Hall, on Christmas day in 1941. Unfortunately, no copy of this recording was saved. In 1942, Crosby recorded the song for Decca, accompanied by the John Scott Trotter Orchestra. In that same year, “Holiday Inn” was released, which featured Crosby singing the song as a duet with Marjorie Reynolds. By the end of this year, “White Christmas” had topped the charts, making it the biggest selling Christmas single of all time.

Because of the success of the song, another movie was released in 1954, titled “White Christmas.” This movie, starring Crosby, Danny Kaye, Rosemary Clooney and Vera-Ellen, topped the box-office sales during that holiday season, and was the highest grossing movie of that year. Today, many people still have a copy of “White Christmas” in their own DVD collection, and they love to get it out during the holidays for an encore viewing year after year.

“The Santa Clause” was well received by viewers worldwide and grossed over $144 million in the United States of America alone during its opening month. It also got over $189 million upon its worldwide review. “The Santa Clause” movie is often being shown during the holiday season and there have been two sequels which also did rather well at the time of their opening.
